Monday, October 04, 2004Change the world for a fiver! I love the idea of this book: change the world for a fiver. The idea that people doing lots of small positive things in the world, is a world chinging is a fantastic empowering idea. It is inspiring. It somehw gives some personmal joy to be making a difference, even if it is small and seemingly imperceptable. It kinda recalls the idea that it is "more blessed to give than to receive". And it is that idea that makes the book so radical and so subversive - because it is counter-cultural!! The idea of looking beyond oneself to the world around you is a world changing idea becasue it counters the self-serving, consumerism that destroys the world and pervades Western culture. So what are some of the ideas? well ... 1. Learn to be friendly in another language 2. Decline plastic carrier bags wherever possible 3. Have more meals together 4. Use both sides of every piece of paper 5. Always put your lose change in a charity tin 6. Turn off the tap whilst cleaning your teeth 7. Read a story with a child 8. Use a mug - not a disposable cup 9. Register as an organ donor 10. Recycle your books Just keep that smile that appeared on your face as you read those. and let your imagination run away with you ... then do it ... then imagine a whole community of people doing some of these things ... then think of your church doing those things.
