Thursday, January 15, 2004Last Sunday at Home Church it was mentioned that the Gospel was 'unpopular'. I.e. it got Jesus killed - that makes it fairly unpopular. It isn;t as simple as that, I guess "many followed him" & "they were amazed at his teaching". But clearly Jesus didn't try to 'sell' them his teaching, or promise them a life of freedom and happiness in a Capitalist Western sense. I wonder what it might mean to have an unpopular Gospel. Thoughts: 1) It is not that WE are obnoxious and annoying to people in our attitudes. 2) It might be that we do not allow the prevailing culture of materialism and individualism to dominate our lifestyle and there for cause to life radically different lives, and that our lives might challenge others lives that makes them uncomfortable with their selfishness and greed. Thereby they are called into a transformed way of living as they respond to Jesus Kingdom call. the call that they feel maybe 'life' to them or it may be 'annoying' or 'obnoxious' to them, not becaus eof hte message itself but because of the reality of their own lives that they are faced with. maybe...
