There is an amazing collection of images here at the old bill. It is amazing how Jesus has been portrayed in both good and horrendous ways through history and accross cultures. There is something useful in looking at how others portray Jesus - it reveals how we have limited him to our own perceptions, how we have somehow 'owned' him. To see Jesus portrayed as black rather than the white, blue-eyed boy wakes us up to how we see him in our minds eye - "oh, yeah he wasn't English"! Once sensitised to such things those 'blue-eyed' portrayals start to become offensive, as if Jesus has been co-opted by one group, especially when that is combined with a flag... It also [and conversely] reminds us of God's incarnational act in Christ - Jesus became like 'us'. Identified himself with all humanity in order to save all. Which did you like best? Which offended you? Why? Posted by: Mark | 11:45 am |
Church in Salcey Forest We had a great walk through the forest on Sunday morning and discovered what other people do at that time of the week! The sun was shining, and the company was good ;o). Oh and the play ground was good too:
Sunday, August 21, 2005We're Back After 3 weeks journeying we have returned! We had two fantastic weeks in France and then one week at 28:18 - the Salt and Light bible camp. Weather was mixed at 28:18 - it rained on the first day and then there was a huge downpour on the Friday. Like serious rain [deja vu of Harrogate]. Why does that always happen? The fields turned to rivers and the roads to mud. At least it was short-lived!! Steve Locke did a great job on security [along with Tristan, Miriam and others]. Steve's helpfulness even extended to help cars stuck in the mud ... and here was the result ... [he wasn't even on duty!]
